There are many reasons to why we are having a restless night’s sleep. It could be the mind overthinking or replaying a situation again and again. Or it could be your health, noise from your neighbour, diet to your mattress. But if it is none of the reasons mentioned here, it could be your bed linens.

There are several factors to take note of with your bedding that can lead to a comfortable or disturbing sleep. The range from fabric, maintenance, to thread counts.

Bed Linen Fabric

There are a several types of fabric you can consider when selecting your bedsheets. Some materials can increase the heat in your body if you tend to sweat or feel hot in a tropical weather. In particular, the increasing temperatures in our climate is not helping matters.

Thread Counts

There is a misconception that astronomical thread counts mean the sheet is better and more comfortable. Although it is generally true that the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet and the more likely it will wear well, good sheets contain thread counts anywhere from 200 to 800. There are tricks to inflate the thread counts which don’t actually improve the hand of the fabric and may lead the buyer to detract from the fabric’s quality. There are cotton sheets with 200 thread counts which are finished nicely and feels smooth as if they have a higher thread count.

Maintenance

Wash your sheets in warm water to keep away any bacterial or viruses at least once a week or twice a month. Although it may seem a good idea to use softener to make your sheets softer in the wash, this can in fact wear out the material faster.

Don’t forget to wash new bed sheets at least twice to remove dirt, fabric treatment resident and enhancements such as starch or stiffening agents that could have been used to ensure attractive packaging. Also be mindful of the detergent you use to launder your bed linen as some scented or dyed soap products can cause skin and respiratory irritation which interferes with your sleep. Fresh bedding promotes a good night’s rest so wash your sheets at least every ten days if you can.

According to Harvard Health, sleep and mental health are closely related. Lack of sleep affects your psychological state and mental function. So, if you are experiencing difficulty in having a deep and restful sleep, check the causes such as your health, diet and have a look at your bed linen to see if changing a new set would help you rest better.
